About the Magazine

Adirondack Sports & Fitness is an outdoor recreation and fitness magazine covering the Adirondack Park and greater Capital-Saratoga region of New York State. We are the authoritative source for information regarding individual, aerobic, life-long sports and fitness in the area. The magazine is published 12-times per year at the beginning of each month.

We cover cross-country skiing, hiking, running, mountain biking, road biking, downhill skiing, snowboarding, weightlifting, swimming, camping, backpacking, canoeing, in-line skating, snowshoeing, triathlon, kayaking, tennis, golf, aerobics, rock/ice climbing, and telemark skiing. We feature invigorating articles and inspiring photographs of in-season sports, regional destinations, and special events.

You’ll also find insightful regional news briefs, a comprehensive calendar of events, Web site reviews, athlete profiles, race results, articles on training and nutrition, and useful reviews. Adirondack Sports & Fitness is designed for recreational athletes, just as it is for marathoners and adventure racers. Our mission is to inspire and educate athletes of all levels, whether they are at the top of their sport or weekend athletes.

Contributor Guidelines

Editorial Guidelines:

Adirondack Sports & Fitness is the only regional publication that uniquely covers outdoor recreation sports and fitness topics in New York State's Adirondack Park and Capital-Saratoga region. The magazine strives to be the authoritative source for information regarding individual, aerobic, life-long sports in the region – of interest to both visitors and residents.

The monthly magazine feature articles explore in-season sports, regional destinations, and special events. Regular columns include regional news briefs, a comprehensive calendar of events, a review of sports/fitness/regional Web sites, athlete profiles, race results, nutrition/fitness, and reviews.

Although our feature articles are usually assigned to a stable of experienced and proven writers, we're always interested in new authors and their ideas. In particular, we look for articles on the region, outdoor events, and special events or activities. Features are generally 100 to 1,500 words in length. These articles cover in-season sports, fitness topics, special events, issues, short profiles, destinations, and reviews of gear or equipment.

Queries should present a clear, original, and provocative thesis, not merely a topic or idea. Writers should become familiar with the magazine and can do so by requesting a sample copy. Please send an address label and a check for $2.00 to cover postage. Along with a writer's query we like to see a few published stories.

Payment is $0.10 per published word paid approximately fifteen days after the issue publishes. All work submitted must be the original property of the writer and should not have appeared in another publication. Facts in all articles must be verified or substantiated in the text.

Feature articles generally cover in-season sports including: cross-country skiing, hiking, running, mountain biking, road biking, downhill skiing, snowboarding, weightlifting, swimming, camping, backpacking, canoeing, in-line skating, snowshoeing, triathlon, kayaking, tennis, golf, aerobics, rock/ice climbing, telemark skiing, family activities, touring, access, and learning. In addition, related topics on health, fitness, and nutrition are included throughout the year.

Queries should be received at least two weeks prior to submission deadline (see below for deadlines). Frequently, we will assign submissions. We will regard manuscripts on speculation; most positive responses to queries are on speculation.

Please submit your work via email or on a PC disk. If on disk, we prefer the disk to contain one file, saved in Word. We request a two-to-three-sentence biography of yourself with your submission. Unsolicited materials will not be returned without a SASE. Ideally, high quality photos or camera-ready artwork should accompany feature articles.

All payments are based upon 1st American rights. Inform us when your submission is simultaneously submitted to another magazine, and if your material has been published previously.
