Erie Canal – Celebrating 200 Years

This year, New York invites the world to help celebrate the bicentennial of the Erie Canal. This year’s canal season includes special events, recreational activities, exhibits and festivals to commemorate this 19th century feat of engineering that played an integral role in New York’s development and beyond. The NYS Canal Corporation will open the canal west of Syracuse on May 16, but due to heavy rains the eastern end will open in phases soon after. For the bicentennial, the season will be extended by two weeks to end on November 3. READ MORE

Originally from Amsterdam, Jen Bergeron moved to Slingerlands as a teen and graduated from Bishop Maginn High School in Albany. Back then she took dance lessons at Schenectady at Merritt’s Dance Studio 3-4 days a week. She also played basketball and recalls she was always fast on the court but lacked finesse. “I loved playing and the competition really fueled me,” she stated. There are MILLIONS of birds flying over your head most nights this month! When you are outside enjoying a spring evening, look up. No, not at the stars. Look up and consider that during peak bird migration in May, there are hundreds of thousands of birds migrating over your head every single night. In fact, according to data from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, over 8.9 million birds were flying simultaneously over the Adirondacks in the middle of the night on May 1, 2024.
