NORTHEAST WINTER EXPO HIGHLIGHTS

INSPIRING FILM SCREENINGS – Get stoked for the winter season while you watch eight (yes you read that right, eight!) awesome ski films at the expo this year. We will be showing the four films that make up season four of the Trew to You film project series, as well as Beyond the Summit, 300 Miles Melting, Shaped by Land, and Take me to Ski Venture. Each film will be screened once on Saturday (10/24) and again on Sunday (10/25) – see the full screening schedule: northeastwinterexpo.com.

Trew to You Films – “Theory of Butta” follows two rambunctious gals on a backcountry quest with one goal in mind: to find the ‘Butta,’ the source of eternal fame, power, and glorious steeze. “Senderos” is centered around winter in the Southwest – where desert and snow meet, and the pace feels a little slower – Senderos follows a group of riders finding their own way through the season, from quiet resort days to backcountry pockets and everything in between. “Scribble” follows East Coast skier and artist Noah Ball as he seeks inspiration for his art and his skiing in New York’s Adirondack Mountains. “Forecast Her” asks the question: what does it mean to carry responsibility for other people’s safety in an environment you can’t control?

Kit DesLauriers in Beyond the Summit. Beyond the Summit

Beyond the Summit – In April 2022, POW Athlete Alliance member, Kit DesLauriers and her self-supported team traveled across a portion of Alaska’s Coastal Plain, which is currently planned to have seismic oil and gas exploration. During their journey, the team conducted snow depth measurements in a citizen science based approach to help determine if actual snow depths are in the cited range for acceptable oil exploration by the BLM in their Record of Decision. Based on Kit’s previous travels across the Coastal Plain, her hypothesis is that the snow depths found will not meet the stated minimum of either a nine inch average, or three inches over the highest tussocks. During the expedition, Kit and her team also made the first ski descent of the second highest mountain in the Brooks Range, Mt. Hubley, making Kit the first person to ski the five highest mountains in the United States Arctic.

Torey Lee Brooks on Vermont’s Catamount Trail. 300 Miles Melting

300 Miles Melting – Climate change is our planet’s number one threat. And one of its biggest targets is being overlooked: New England. While major ski resorts maintain an image with overwhelming snowmaking, the backcountry of this region paints a real picture of what’s going on. And there’s no better place to look than Vermont’s Catamount Trail, which spans 300 miles up the length of the state. Enter 300 Miles Melting: A film that follows skier and activist, Torey Lee Brooks, as she attempts to ski – and learn from – the entire Catamount Trail amidst a turbulent winter. Along the way, we meet brilliant minds including Bill McKibben (author and activist), Shelby Semmes (Trust For Public Land), Dr. Liz Burakowski (University of New Hampshire), and Matt Williams (Catamount Trail Association).

Shaped By Land – Shaped by Land is a short documentary following Adam Kjeldsen, one of the only local ski guides in Greenland, as he builds a career on his own terms in an industry largely dominated by foreign operators. Filmed on location in Greenland with a Greenlandic crew, the film explores what sustainable, community-rooted adventure tourism can look like when it’s led by someone who calls the place home. The film has screened at Banff Mountain, Kendal Mountain, and Big Sky Documentary film festivals, Mountainfilm in Telluride, and won a Jury Award at the Anchorage International Film Festival. Alongside its online release, Shaped by Land is running an impact campaign with proceeds going directly to the Greenlandic Ski Federation – supporting the next generation of local skiers and guides. To learn more or host a screening, visit: shapedbyland.com.

Take Me to Ski Venture –   Ski Venture is a 110-foot ski hill tucked into the Glenville hills of Upstate New York. Set apart by a long history and a unique model of community ownership, this unassuming hill has united skiers of all ages around a common love. The film captures the magic of a ski community 100 years in the making and reminds us all, skiers and non-skiers alike, of our fundamental human need to be part of a community.

The trails he cut for Magic are naturally narrow and twisting, descending 1,500 heart-pumping vertical feet to the two Summit lifts – true vertical skiing.
